How to Care for Prosthetic Limbs

How to Care for Prosthetic Limbs

If you're an amputee, you may have chosen to be fitted for a prosthetic limb. You must care for it properly, or you can develop problems with your residual limb, which may mean months of trying to get along without your prosthetic.

Instructions

    1

Check your prosthetic daily for tears, cracks or other signs of wear. If you find any, have your prosthetic repaired by your prosthetist before the damage gets worse and you can't use it.

    2

Lubricate your joint. If the joint seems too loose, have it adjusted or repaired by your prosthetist.

    3

Keep the prosthetic clean, paying special attention to the inside of the socket. Use mild soap and water and dry it thoroughly before wearing. Because the socket comes into contact with your residual limb, keeping it clean helps prevent sores or infections.

    4

Wear shoes at all times with a prosthetic leg to keep from damaging the foot portion and to ensure that you maintain the proper gait

    5

Ask for additional prosthetics that are specifically designed for things such as swimming or running. Don't use your prosthetic for activities for which it wasn't designed.

How to Get 100 Percent Daily Dose of Vitamin C

The U.S. recommended daily allowance of Vitamin C is 60 to 95mg per day, but many organizations suggest that you consume more. The Vitamin C Foundation recommends as much as 3000mg, and other authorities fall in between the two. It's best to get your daily dose of Vitamin C from natural sources like fruits and vegetables.

Instructions

    1

Stock up on fruits and vegetables. Eat them as snacks and during meals.

    2

Plan to eat five fruit and vegetable servings per day. More is better, but at least three will do in a pinch. One orange, mango or grapefruit, 2 kiwis, 2 cups of raw spinach, a cup of fruit or vegetables, or 1/2 cup of juice equals one serving.

    3

Take the time to peel, slice and cook fruits and vegetables. Make the preparation and consumption of fruits and vegetables a priority.

    4

Serve colorful meals. Your plate should contain greens, reds and other bright colors. The more colorful the fruit or vegetable, the higher it is in Vitamin C. Strawberries, peppers, oranges and leafy green vegetables are excellent sources of Vitamin C.

    5

Drink fruit juice with meals and snacks. Orange and grapefruit juice are high in Vitamin C. Check the label on juice to make sure it contains Vitamin C.

    6

Take supplements only as a last resort if you can't get five servings a day of fruit and vegetables.

How to Run a Relay Race

How to Run a Relay Race

You jog in place, stretch, move your neck from one side, then to the other, keeping your muscles loose, but also as an attempt to calm your nerves. You pray, "Please, God don't let me mess up. Please don't let me drop the baton." And then you run.

Instructions

    1

Practice handing off the baton to your team mates. You cannot practice too much. Races have been lost because of poor baton hand-offs. Your team may have the fastest runners in the track and field meet, but if a runner flubs the hand-off, he could flub the race.

    2

Decide who will begin the first leg, the first runner of the race, and who will end the race, the last leg. A fast beginning will give you an advantage. If there is any distance to make up, the person running the last leg should be the fastest on the team.

    3

Stay within the marked area for the baton hand-off. If the runner passing the baton or the runner receiving the baton goes past the designated area, that could disqualify your team.

    4

Run and hold on to the baton.

    5

Don't tense your muscles. That probably seems like an oxymoron to suggest running and relaxing your muscles since you're using your muscles for running, but it's not. Allow your muscles to work for you without tensing them.

    6

Focus in front of you. Looking behind you, and turning your head to look to either side, slows you down.

    7

Run your race. Stick to your strategy.

How to Dress Like a Punk

Clothing and accessories reveal much about your personality and style. Punk fashion is all about being on the edge of what is accepted or considered normal by some. It tells the world that you are not a conformist, but rather an independent individual.

Instructions

Clothing

    1

Build your punk style from the ground up by wearing Dr. Marten boots or Chuck Taylor All-Stars sneakers.

    2

Wear a kilt, leather or denim slim-fit pants with a T-shirt that promotes your favorite punk band or a strong political belief.

    3

Customize your clothes by slashing or ripping them, and place laces or pins over the tears to hold them together.

    4

Alter the look of your clothes by splattering bleach or paint on them.

Accessories

    5

Enhance your punk look with torn fishnet stockings, bullet or studded belts, metal spikes, patches and buttons.

    6

Wear safety pins (in your pierced earlobes) as earrings, military-style dog tags as necklaces, and rubber gaskets as bracelets. You may also hang a straight razor blade around your neck with a chain or pieces of a string for an edgy, dangerous-looking accessory.

    7

Top off your punk look with a military jacket.

Hair and Makeup

    8

Dye your hair in a bright hue such as red, orange, blue, green or purple and wear it in a spiked, Mohawk, shaved or partially shaved style. You can also bleach your hair white or platinum blond, or dye it jet black.

    9

Adorn your eyes with heavy, black liner and mascara or decorate your face with sweeping, bold-colored eye shadows that extend to the hair line.

    10

Apply bright red lipstick to your lips.

How to Get Around DFW Airport

Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport is one of the largest airports in the United States. It's size makes it very difficult for first-time passengers to find their way around. To make your trip smooth and easier, the steps below will help you to find you way around DFW airport.

Instructions

Departing from DFW Airport

    1

Visit the Transportation Security Administration's website (see Resources) for a list of items you can and can't bring in your carry-on baggage. Follow these guidelines accurately to make the passage through security check points quick and easy.

    2

Check and re-check your flight itinerary. The airport recommends that you arrive at least two hours before your scheduled flight. If it is your first time to Dallas-Fort Worth Airport, consider arriving even earlier than that so you won't miss your flight if you get lost.

    3

Park, if you're driving your own car to the airport, in one of the various airport parking lots, and take one of the provided shuttles to the terminal. The options are valet parking, terminal parking, express parking and remote parking. Keep in mind that, the further you park from the terminal, the cheaper the cost.

    4

Review online maps of the DFW airport terminals (see Resources). Note the location of the airline ticket counter and flight terminal for your departing flight.

    5

Head to the terminal indicated on your itinerary, which is terminal A, B, C, D or E. Arrive at the airline ticket counter with your baggage, identification and itinerary ready. The location of all the ticket counters is near the upper level entrance of the appropriate terminal.

    6

Pass through a security check-point after checking in for your flight. You will find security check-points at various convenient locations throughout the terminal and all of them provide access to the departure gates.

    7

Find the departure gate for your flight by following the maps located through the terminal and the signs. Check your itinerary for your seat number and listen for the flight attendants to call for your rows to board the plane.

Arriving at DFW Airport

    8

Enter the terminal through the arrival gate. Proceed to step two of this section if your trip is over. If you have a connecting flight departing from DFW, travel to the terminal and departure gate indicated on your itinerary and follow steps six and seven above where applicable.

    9

Proceed to the baggage claim indicated by your flight attendants before your departure from the plane. Baggage claims are outside the secured terminal area and your baggage will be in the same terminal as your arriving flight. Wait for and pick up your baggage at the appropriate carousel.

    10

Arrange for someone to pick you up at the upper-level roadway of the terminal you arrive in, or take one of the provided shuttles to the airport where you parked your vehicle.

How to Win Space Invaders

How to Win Space Invaders

Space Invaders was so popular in its original arcade release it caused a yen coin shortage in Japan. The arcade and Atari version have remained popular and although modern games have better graphics and more intricate game play, trying to beat Space Invaders remains a huge challenge. To score big, you must have quick hands and a winning strategy.

Instructions

    1

Take advantage of a cheat enabling double shots on the Atari console. Turn the power off and hold down the reset button. While holding down the reset button, turn the power back on. Let go of the reset button and start a game and you can fire twice every time you press the fire button.

    2

Shoot a narrow path in one of your barriers and then hide under it. You can continue to shoot through your path and the barrier provides at least some protection as long as the opening is as narrow as possible. This strategy ends at level five however, as there are not more barriers.

    3

Prepare to beat level five before it begins. For the first five levels of the game, the space invaders start lower and lower on the screen and by level five they are as low as they can get. Hold the joystick to the right before the level begins with your finger on the fire button. Move quickly across the screen stopping briefly at each space invader in order to shoot him to clear this dangerous, low row right away.

    4

Repeat this movement for each subsequent level. All levels after level five are exactly the same. By clearing out the lower row immediately, you dramatically improve your chances to beat the game. If you move quickly you can even eliminate the lower two rows by holding in place slightly longer before moving on to the next space invader.

    5

Get bonus points by shooting the mother ships which cross the top of the screen. Concentrate on shooting the space invaders until you get down to two rows of four invaders. Then, avoid the space invader's fire and wait for mother ships to pass, shooting them as they do. Be careful not to shoot anymore space invaders as the mother ships will not pass if there are less than eight invaders on the screen.

    6

Beat the game with 500,000 points. Although the game does continue for infinity, getting 500,000 points is a benchmark at which you beat the game.
