One of the big biology lessons as you home school your children will be about the human body and how it works. And a fascinating part of the body is the digestive system. The digestive system starts at the mouth and goes all the way through the body to the rectum. If you plan on teaching the digestive system, read on to learn what you need to keep in mind.
Instructions
- 1
Take into account your child's age as you plan your home school lessons. A first grader will need a more simplified lesson plan than a fifth grader.
2Do some homework and find some sites on the web or borrow some books from the library that will take your child through the digestive system, showing food being masticated (chewed), passed through the esophagus into the stomach and then through the bowels before being passed out. There are many sites that are animated and many books and sites that simply show the organs.
3Plan on having your child draw or cut out the various organs of the digestive system so they can understand where they all lie in the body and how they are connected. Ask them to trace with their finger where a bite of an apple would go.
4Discuss nutrition with your child. The digestive system function is all about the breakdown of food into energy and vitamins and minerals that keep our body running. Explain to your child what happens if they eat too much fat, sugar and unhealthy food as opposed to healthy fruits and vegetables.
5Arrange to ask your child questions so they can put together what they've learned. Questions such as "what have you eaten today," "did that food give you energy" and "after you chew it, where does your food go" will be helpful learning tools to your home school students.
