How to Test Horse Hay

How to Test Horse Hay

Good hay provides necessary fiber and protein for your horse. Testing for quality hay requires several procedures that take little time and effort. These on the spot tests help in determining what's good or bad hay before it's fed to your horse.

Instructions

    1

Look for hay containing a green to light gold coloring. Yellow or brown hay mixed in might not have all of the nutrients, but it is still safe.

    2

Check for more leaf matter than stalks and mature seed heads. Protein comes from leafs while fiber is in the stalks.

    3

Pick up a bale higher than your waist then drop it. Good hay bounces when it hits the ground. There should not be more than a little bit of dust when it hits the ground.

    4

Test the hay's odor by smelling it up close. Obtain best results by digging into the hay, toward the middle of the bale. Sniff out a sweet odor for good hay while passing up any that smells moldy or musty.

    5

Watch and smell for dust or mold when moving it around. Dust looks like little particles that float through the air while mold looks more like smoke wafting through the air.

    6

Rub and squeeze the hay for sturdiness. Bad hay crumbles easily. Good hay remains flexible.

    7

Get an analysis of the hay by taking samples to a certified lab. Contact your local farming authority or association for procedures.

How to Make Sidewalks for a Gingerbread House

The holiday season signals a time when the kitchen mixers come out and the house fills with the aroma of baked goods. Another way to improve your holiday is to make a gingerbread house. To complete the structure, you can add a sidewalk, stained glass windows and a magnificent door. Here is how to make the sidewalk to your edible house.

Instructions

    1

Choose the pavers. Choose neutral colored Necco candy for a slate look, speckled halved jelly beans for a pebbled sidewalk or brown sugar for a dirt sidewalk.

    2

Color the royal icing the same color as the pavers. This will disguise the bright white royal icing used to glue the pavers into place. Add a light brown food coloring to look like mortar for a brick path. Or add a brown sugar color to blend in with the "dirt."

    3

Apply a small amount of royal icing directly to the work space. Place the pavers into place. Continue Steps 3 and 4 until your sidewalk design is complete.

    4

Wrap the workspace in aluminum foil, place the gingerbread house on top of that and then the sidewalk. Design the sidewalk on the foil using a toothpick. Then follow the design pattern with the above steps.

How to Dress Like Jennifer Hudson

Jennifer Hudson shot to stardom almost instantly and has become a good role model for girls with her confidence and sexy look accentuating her curves. She always looks sleek, sophisticated and ultra feminine. Use these tips to dress with confidence the way Jennifer Hudson does.

Instructions

    1

Flatter curves and make the most of what you've got with the right undergarments. Get a good, supportive bra that fits perfectly by getting measured for one at Victoria's Secret. Wear a body slimmer to get a smooth silhouette, especially when dressing up.

    2

Choose clothes that are made from beautiful, luscious fabrics. Jennifer is often photographed in sensuous, soft silks when on the red carpet and soft cashmere sweaters and shiny, silky button-ups when dressed casually.

    3

Keep lines simple. Jennifer's clothes are usually simple, classic and no-frills which make her look sophisticated. Her clothes are not overly complicated and are elegant in their simplicity.

    4

Show off an hourglass figure with belts. Jennifer often wears a thick, chunky belt over short dresses and long sweaters so that she looks feminine and not frumpy.

    5

Wear layers. Jennifer often wears tailored waist or hip-length jackets with jeans, or long coats or sweaters left unbuttoned to create long vertical lines that are slimming over short dresses.

    6

Dress down with stretch jeans and boots. These will show off your assets. Draw attention to your curvy behind with embellishments like embroidery or rhinestones on the jeans.

    7

Dress up with long gowns that have deep V-necks and empire waists. The V-neck creates vertical lines that are slimming, and the empire waist accentuates the thinnest part of the body.

How to Open an Art Gallery

How to Open an Art Gallery

Three years ago I started what is one of a handful of arts incubators in the United States, and quite possibly the only one that is a for-profit entity (I believe in walking the talk) in a warehouse in Portland Oregon. The gallery emerged about 16 months into the business, and is just about 650 square feet. The Working Artists Gallery (WAG) is now in its second year, with gallery attendance, and sales, soaring for the emerging artists we exhibit there!

In this article I hit the highlights of the lessons I learned that may lead you to success in establishing your own gallery. If this is your passion, use what is offered to help you fulfill on your dream!

Instructions

    1

ART U LOVE, ART OTHERS LOVE. Decide what kind of art you want to exhibit, then brainstorm who will be likely to attend exhibits of that type of artwork, and purchase the work. Write out a statement about the art you will show in your gallery, the kinds of artists your space will represent, who will attend the openings, and who will buy the work. If you are a visual person, go through arts magazines you enjoy and cutout images that help you describe the above. When you've come close to a final decision about the art and artists you wish to represent in your gallery, and the people you believe will be interested in and purchase their work, make a list of all the people you know, or can find through research, who fit both these descriptions.

Then get in touch with a number of them and ask (for artists) about their work, what inspires their art, learn about the materials they use and why. And for collectors learn about their collecting habits, ask what kind of art they collect and why, find out how long they've been collecting and what started them.

Also see who else has a gallery similar to what you're proposing, find out where they are, who they represent and more.

    2
Man with Red Cape, copyright 2005 Lee Day Robbins

GALLERY BIZ BASICS. Purchase, read and use the following books that I used to guide me in my own successful gallery work:
    1) Art Office Second Edition by Constance Smith and Sue Viders - 80+ Business Forms, Charts, Sample Letters, Legal Documents & Business Plans for Fine Artists;
    2) Fine Art Publicity by Susan Abbott;
    3) Corporate Art Consulting by Susan Abbott;
    4) The Artist-Gallery Partnership: a Practical Guide to Consigning Art by Zella Jackson. Every basic thing you need to know about opening gallery, working with artists and collectors, etc. is contained in these books.

Take notes, mark in the margins of the books, practice with the forms, do any of the exercises suggested. And use the books in a way that works for you.

    3
    Suckle, copyright 2007 Joroko

WRITE A PLAN OF ACTION. Now, taking all that you've learned in Steps 1 and 2, you are ready to write down a simple and brief plan for getting from today to the day your artists are THE artists whose work represents the ideals and aspirations of your gallery's mission, and sell like hotcakes in your market!

Write a statement about what kind of gallery you intend to open; the type of art and artists it will serve and why; the people who will be interested in seeing and buying this work and why. Remember to refer to your interviews and research materials to back up your thinking. Then write out all the actions you know you will need to take for the following "chunks" of the business:

    1) location and building information. Include lease and purchase information, business and building requirements by your city, including insurance and ADA requirements, cost of operations, personnel (if any);

    2) recruiting the artists whose work you want to exhibit and represent including the steps in the process of recruitment. Some things to think about are who will be curating the exhibits, are they juried or open calls, how often will the exhibits rotate, what will you provide at the openings, what percentage do you take, etc.;

    3) marketing strategy and plan for getting the news to the right people about your business and the art you sell.

Once you have as many to-dos as you can think of in your lists, transfer the To-Dos to small Post-Its, organize them along a time line (draw a long line on a sheet of butcher paper, or some other paper on a roll), PLANNING BACKWARDS from the day you sell out a show to today.

"How the heck do you plan backwards?" Good question.

Think of a successful outcome (ART SHOW SELLS OUT!)and then answer one question - "What had to happen in order for this outcome to be achieved?". So, if your successful outcome is an 18 piece exhibit selling out, the outcome could be written as EXHIBIT CLOSES, SHOW SOLD OUT. Then ask, "What had to happen in order for this outcome to be achieved?" Answer with another outcome such as 8 PEOPLE CAME TO THE OPENING AND BOUGHT 12 PIECES, 4 PEOPLE CAME DURING THE MONTH AND PURCHASED THE REST. Ask the question again, and answer it with an outcome. INVITATIONS WERE FOLLOWED UP BY ME ONE WEEK PRIOR TO THE OPENING. And keep going until you get to today.

Remember to attach a budget to each of the actions/items that need money spent in order for the step to be achieved.

    4
Urban Texture postcard. This was a popular exhibit and the work sold well.

DO THE TO-DOs. Follow the steps on your plan. Go shopping for the perfect gallery space. Begin recruiting artists. Book them. Talk to a banker or other money lender (for micro-loans visit MercyCorps, or recruit family and friends). Begin writing your press releases and developing personal relationships with the press folks. Hire a graphic design student to design your logo, business cards, website. Recruit friends and people in the arts community to pitch in with the remodel work. Get quotes for remodel work that must be done by a licensed and bonded professional, insurance, electrical work from at least 3 sources for each part of the project. Sign the lease. Hire the contractors. Transform the space into your gallery. Promote the first exhibit. Install the show. Throw a fabulous opening. Sell lots of artwork. Deposit the money. Pay the artist. Pay your Curator (if you have that kind of an arrangement). Promote the next exhibit and do the process all over again.

LOVE THE LIFE YOU CREATE. If you are like me, opening a gallery, and being involved in the arts, is a lifelong dream. I worked in a plethora of other industries over a 30 year period, and I can tell you that this work I do, and the resultant life I lead, IS THE BEST THING I'VE EVER DONE FOR MYSELF HANDS DOWN! So come on - take the risk to follow your passion - and LOVE YOUR LIFE. To Art, and all the wealth it brings in so many different ways!

How to Make a Jar Snowman

Turn an ordinary glass jar into a whimsical Santa Claus, and you have an adorable candy or cookie jar for the Christmas season. Making a jar snowman is so simple and inexpensive that you can make several and share some Christmas smiles.

Instructions

    1

Slice about 1/2 inch off one side of the Styrofoam ball so the flat side can sit on the jar lid. Glue the ball to the jar lid.

    2

Cut a small piece of orange felt and shape it for the snowman's nose. Attach it to the snowman's face with craft glue.

    3

Glue two small black bead eyes to the snowman's face. Glue five or six black beads in the shape of a smile for the snowman's mouth.

    4

Poke a twig arm into each side of the Styrofoam ball.

    5

Tie the piece of fabric into a scarf around the top of the jar and secure it with a few drops of glue. Put the scarf so the jar can still be opened.

    6

Attach some buttons to the front of the jar with glue, or cut some buttons from felt and attach them with glue.

    7

Glue the craft store hat on top of the snowman's head and screw the lid onto the jar. Glue a miniature broom to one twig and a miniature shovel to the other twig.

How to Organize a UFC Watch Party

How to Organize a UFC Watch Party

The Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) is a competition that involves several martial arts, and has become extremely famous in the US. Watching a UFC event with a group of friends is a great way to enjoy an evening and a great excuse to throw a little party. Here are some tips for organizing your next UFC Watch Party.

Instructions

    1

Send invitations out to your invited guests at least three weeks ahead of the UFC event. Indicate an RSVP date of at least one week prior to the party so you can plan the amount of food you will need to purchase.

    2

Plan on serving food that can be easily accessed and eaten on while guests are sitting down to watch the UFC event. Fingers foods and appetizers are a good choice as these can be munched on throughout the entire party.

    3

. New York City in November and December can be cold, so dress appropriately. While there is no dress code for Radio City Music Hall, they do ask that you use your best judgment.

    4

Arrange for transportation to and from the Christmas Spectacular. Parking is an issue in the city. Make use of a limo or cab service to get you to and from your hotel.

    5

Arrive early. You don't want to be looking for your seat as the performance begins. Christmas Spectacular shows are crowded. Plan accordingly.

    6

Enjoy the show. This is a show well worth going to. While the production is different each year, it always spreads holiday cheer.

How to Shine Pennies

Pennies are made from copper and are bright and shiny when they're first minted. However, over time, the copper oxidizes and the penny becomes dull and brown. There are a number of ways to remove the oxidized layer and make pennies shine like new.

Instructions

    1

Soak the penny in a mild acid such as white vinegar or lemon juice. A carbonated beverage can work also. After a few minutes, remove the penny and wipe it dry with a paper towel.

    2

Rub the penny with ketchup, toothpaste, a paste of baking soda and water or brass cleaner. You can use an old toothbrush or your fingers for rubbing.

    3

Add salt to white vinegar to shine pennies that have a lot of oxidation. This mixture won't make a paste, but you can use the edge of a paper towel or washcloth to rub the vinegar and salt on the penny.

    4

Buy a commercial product to shine your pennies. These products are usually harsher than household products, and you will have to wear protective gloves and protect your work surface.

    5

Use a pencil eraser to rub the oxidized layer from the penny.

How to Remove Mineral Stains from Inside a Dishwasher

How to Remove Mineral Stains from Inside a Dishwasher

If your home has hard water, it's a daily challenge to keep mineral deposits off household surfaces, especially the inside of your dishwasher. It requires frequent cleaning. The best way to keep mineral stains at bay is to invest in a water-softening system. Even if you do that, the pipes may be rusted. You'll still end up with mineral stains inside your dishwasher.

Instructions

    1

Identify the type of stain. Red or brown stains are usually caused by iron or rust. Greenish blue stains come from copper. Brown or black stains are caused by manganese or other minerals.

    2

Buy an acidic cleaner. They get rid of discoloration from copper, aluminum, bronze and brass. Acids also eliminate rust stains caused by iron. Read the labels and look for one that specifies rust removal. Cleaners that focus on toilet bowls, cleaning metal or removing rust are the best bet.

    3

Put some cleaner or rust remover in your dishwasher's soap dispenser cup. In addition, sprinkle some on the bottom of the dishwasher. Run the dishwasher through a cycle. Repeat if necessary.

    4

Scrub away the stains. If the stains are persistent, rub them with a brush or scrub sponge and a gentle cleaner.

    5

Run the rinse cycle to remove any remaining residue.

How to Make a Bean Bag Chair

Bean bag chairs are fun for everyone and make great extra seating in a child's or teen's room. You can make your own bean bag chairs to match your decor. If you go this route, you can make the bean bag chair as large or as small as you want it to be to fit the space.

Instructions

    1

Decide what shape and size you want to make your bean bag chair. Create a pattern using paper or inexpensive fabric-like sheets.

    2

Cut your pattern pieces out of a very sturdy upholstery fabric. Sew them together, leaving an opening for you to fill the bean bag chair. Place your cardboard tube into the opening you've left to fill the bean bag chair.

    3

Fill your bean bag chair with the filler of your choice. You can use Styrofoam pellets, corn kernels or hard beans, such as navy beans. Pour the material you choose through the cardboard tube until the chair is sufficiently stuffed.

    4

Close up the opening you left to fill the bean bag chair using industrial strength Velcro. The adhesive is strong enough that you won't need to sew the hole shut.

    5

Shake the bean bag chair to distribute the filler and test the integrity of the chair. If it's too floppy, add more filler. If it's too firm, remove some filler until you've got the perfect comfort level.

How to Design a Winning Science Fair Display

Your science fair display is the culmination of all the work you've done on your project. It must be attractive, neat and eye-catching so science fair visitors and judges will take the time to read about the results of your experiment.

Instructions

    1

Check the science fair rules to find out the size of the exhibit and display board.

    2

Create a backboard with three sides out of cardboard or wood. You can also order one from a science supply company. They are usually available in black or white. Cover the backboard with colored cloth or shelving paper if desired.

    3

Sketch out the design of the board before attaching anything. Choose what will go in the focal point, or the center of the board.

    4

Write out titles and headings neatly in letters legible from three feet away. Print your headers on a printer, cut your letters from construction paper, make them with stencils or use self-stick letters. Choose colors for attached items that stand out from the background. The title should go in the middle of the board.

    5

Add illustrations or photographs. Place a model or any three-dimensional material in the front of the board.

    6

Attach the following information on the board: the problem, hypothesis, details of the experiment, results and conclusion. Write neatly or print on a printer. Proofread carefully. Erase any pencil guidelines.

    7

Display data in a graph or table created by hand or computer. Put the information in order from the left side.

How to Clean Quickly for Unexpected Guests

Everyone has probably experienced that moment of near panic when you receive an unexpected phone call or knock on the door and you realize the house is a disaster. You can't always anticipate when unexpected guests will arrive, but you can better prepare yourself for when it does happen. Here are a few ways you can clean quickly when unexpected guests show up at your front door.

Instructions

    1

Grab an empty laundry basket or trash bag and throw everything in it that is cluttering up the main living areas of your home, especially floors and table tops. Toys, dirty socks, mail, anything except for clean clothes and food is fair game to toss into this catch all container. Stash the basket or bag into a closet or room you will have closed off to your guests.

    2

Run through your home's typical path of traffic with a vacuum if you have carpet or floor dusting cloth if you have bare floors. Sprinkle or spray a little carpet freshener as you go along or use scented dust cloths. A quick swipe should suffice.

    3

Clear out the sink and counter tops in the kitchen. Stash dirty dishes in the dishwasher or even the oven. Stack mail neatly or put in a decorative basket you can keep in the kitchen for just such occasions. Toss other odds and ends like calculators, pens and the like into the junk drawer.

    4

Spray the kitchen sink quickly with bleach cleaner and allow it to sit a few minutes while you do other tasks in the kitchen. Rinse out the sink quickly before your guests arrive to get rid of the bleach cleaner.

    5

Wipe down the counter tops and stovetop with disinfecting wipes. Don't forget to inspect the fridge and microwave for any visible outside dirt.

    6

Clean the toilet in the main bathroom first by brushing out the bowl to remove any surface dirt. Wipe off the bowl rim, underside of the seat, the seat, behind the seat and just under the basin with disinfecting wipes. Also, wipe the floor around the bowl and check corners for visible hair and dust bunnies.

    7

Spray bathroom mirror and faucets with window cleaner and give it a quick shine by wiping them down with a paper towel. If you have a large mirror, focus on splatter spots instead of cleaning the whole mirror to save time.

    8

Disinfect bathroom counter tops with wipes. This will give them a clean surface and give the bathroom a fresh, clean smell.

    9

Take out the trash. Place it just outside the back door or in the garage, wherever it will be out of sight. Be sure to replace the liner in the trash can.

    10

Freshen up your own appearance by combing your hair and applying a light layer of powder or bronzer to disguise that harried glow you may have acquired while cleaning. Light a candle and set out some flowers, snacks or make coffee if you have time. Take a deep breath, relax and enjoy your company.

How to Get a Show in an Art Gallery

How to Get a Show in an Art Gallery

For artists who choose to make a career with their art, showing their work is a necessary part of the business. The process of showing art in a gallery is still by invitation only. Planning is required to book a show at a gallery of the artist's choice. The artist must gradually build her reputation, experience level and resume so she becomes an artist that galleries take seriously.

Instructions

    1

Take classes in your artistic discipline. Research the institution. Pay special attention to which venues regularly work with the institution to show student work. Colleges and universities often have connections that no amount of money can buy. These relationships are usually free for students to exploit.

    2

Join an art club. These groups are everywhere, and your city is likely to have at least one. Art clubs provide an organized group of artists who can pool their energy into finding locations for the artists to show their work. Often these groups are well-established and have relationships in the community with merchants and restaurateurs who agree to regularly display work from the club's artists.

    3

Enter any available art shows or art festivals in your area. These are generally annual or semiannual events where anyone can show their art for the price of the entrance fee. These events are often held in heavily trafficked places like public parks and shopping malls. Events like this expose a large cross section of your community's population to your art.

    4

Donate your work to charities for inclusion in their auction fund-raisers, or to organizations such as hospitals that have locations to display your work.

    5

Pay attention to the artwork displayed in every place you pass through and look for opportunities to show your own artwork. Opportunities are often present in places you wouldn't normally think of, such as airports, restaurants, corporate lobbies or galleries and government buildings.

    6

Keep a portfolio of samples of your work and the places and events where your work has appeared. Use it to market yourself to private galleries.

    7

Talk with gallery owners and curators. Use your portfolio to present samples of your work and show evidence of the public exposure you've gained. Pitch your work and your ideas for showing it. The more familiar, local gallery personnel are accepting your work, the more likely they are to invite you into the ranks of artists who show with them.

How to Prepare a Lesson Plan for American Red Cross Month

How to Prepare a Lesson Plan for American Red Cross Month

The American Red Cross aims to ease the hardships and suffering of people in America and around the world. March is American Red Cross Month. Here is how you can prepare a lesson plan to help children learn about the Red Cross and appreciate the work of this organization.

Instructions

    1

Choose a learning standard for your lesson plan to fall under. Most states have their own educational requirements for students of each grade level. They might include standards on chronological reasoning, historical research or drawing comparisons. You can pick any of these to build your lesson plan around.

    2

Begin your lesson plan with an introduction about the Red Cross. Give a quick presentation about Red Cross history and hand out a passage describing the organization. Check the Red Cross website for introductory information.

    3

Decide what kind of activity your students will complete. If you want your students research the Red Cross, provide a list of topics to choose from. For example, you might include major events in Red Cross history and important members of the organization.

    4

Include a portion of the lesson plan in which you relate the Red Cross's actions to another lesson your class has already learned. In American History classes, you could find more information about how the Red Cross helped westerners during the Dust Bowl.

    5

Consider having students present their work to each other. This might work best if you have the students work in small groups.
