How to Train for a Duathlon

How to Train for a Duathlon

A duathlon is an athletic event that consists of two different activities, running and biking. In a duathlon, the athlete begins with running, then bikes, and finishes with another run. The distances vary greatly, so there are duathlons that are good for most athletes.

Instructions

    1

Buy the necessary equipment. Running shoes that properly fit are a necessity. Go to a running store to get a proper fit. Also, a bike that is sized correctly is needed. Bike shops provide fittings for a relatively low cost, and even offer it for free if the bike is purchased there.

    2

Work out a training schedule. Spread the workouts out fairly evenly. Mix them up so as not to become bored. Take advantage of the best part of multisport training, the ability to practice different sports.

    3

Practice the transitions. There are two transitions in a duathlon, run to bike, and then bike to run. Practice both, as they both present different obstacles. Remember that the helmet must be on and fastened from the time the bike is moved off the rack until it is back on it securely.

    4

Sign up for a race. Locate a race that is the right distance for your training abilities.

    5

Show up early on race day. This helps especially if rack numbers are not assigned for bikes, since any open spot can be used. The earliest participants get the best rack spots in this situation. Get a feel for the course. Warm up on the course to get familiar with it.

How to Make Clay Pot People

Making clay pot people is a whimsical way to personalize your yard or garden. It doesn't matter if your pots or old, weathered, cracked or stained. These instructions guide you through the basic construction for a small pot person, but it's your imagination and final touch that make your clay pot people come alive.

Instructions

    1

Make the torso first by placing the top rims of the two 8-inch pots together and running the rope through both of them. Hold the two pieces firmly together by tying a knot at each end.

    2

Place the bottom of the 6-inch pot on top of the torso, run the rope up through the hole and make a knot to hold them together. This is the head of the clay pot person. If you decide to put an interesting plant in the pot to resemble hair, stabilize it a bit with wire or a large nut and bolt.

    3

Assemble each arm and leg separately and using five 4-inch pots for each arm and seven for each leg. Make a knot and string the first pot and then pass the rope through the second pot, allowing a little space between the two. Place a mark on the rope where it comes out of the top of the second pot. This is where you'll place the knot. Remove the pot and measure the distance between the first pot and the mark. You'll use this distance between all of the knots on the arms and legs.

    4

Continue stringing and knotting the pots an equal distance apart until you have both arms and legs finished. Leave a length of rope at the top of each so you can attach them to the body. Attach the arms by running the ropes between the torso and head pots and tying them off.

    5

Sit your clay pot person in a somewhat permanent location and position the legs in such a way that they appear attached to the torso. Anchor the legs first, nailing into place the length of rope left at the top and nailing it in place. Place the torso over the legs.

    6

Decorate your friend by pushing sphagnum moss into the spaces between the pots on the arms and legs or plant different types of ground cover or trailing plants to add interest.

How to Play the Organ

Organs are fun to play, and they're a relatively easy instrument to learn, especially if you begin by learning basic notes. Later, when you become more advanced, you'll add foot pedals and change the sound with the stops. With a little practice, you'll soon be playing lovely music on your organ.

Instructions

    1

Learn the notes and how to read music by purchasing a beginner book with the note names labeled on the notes. The black keys come in groups of two and three; find a group of two and slide your finger off the one on the left, down to the left onto the white key. This is the "C" key.

    2

Label the keys starting with the "C" from left to right as "A," "B," "C," "D," "E," "F," "G," "A," "B," then "C" again and keep repeating. Play the notes in order to get a feel for the keys; an organ is different from a piano because it doesn't have a sustaining pedal so you have to practice making your notes flow smoothly.

    3

Purchase organ shoes so your feet don't slip when you're playing the pedals. Practice moving your feet up and down the pedals with your heels on the white notes and your toes on the black.

    4

Practice simple pieces using your hands and your feet at the same time. You don't need formal music for this, just make your own sounds and experiment with the feel.

    5

Play some music by learning the notes for your hands, then learning the notes for your feet. Finally, put them together so you play everything at once.

    6

Have fun with the stops. Play your piece using different sounds and switch sounds quickly while you are playing.

    7

Get formal lessons if you feel this is something you want to pursue. Often church organists and colleges offer lessons.

How to Make a Kunai Knife

How to Make a Kunai Knife

The kunai knife was constructed from a farming instrument that was used in China centuries ago. These harmless tools were regularly sharpened down and turned into weapons for self-defense. They were also used by mountain climbers.

Instructions

    1

Use one sheet of construction paper or two stacked atop each other. Place the rectangle sheet of construction paper flat lengthwise. Fold it in by taking the right upper corner down towards the lower left corner, making a point at the upper right corner. A triangle results.

    2

Cut off the excess paper at the bottom of the construction paper so that a triangle is the sole shape.

    3

Fold the triangle in half where the left and right corners directly opposite one another are placed, one on top of the other. Two smaller triangles result with the crease acting as a side for each one.

    4

Take the left hand side of the triangle and bring it to the middle of crease comprising the two smaller triangles. The left slanted edge of the triangle is aligned with the crease. Continue to fold over and over again until you reach the right side of the triangle. Make the paper into an ice cream cone shape.

    5

Fold flaps at the top of the cone, or kunai, that result from the repeated folding, down inside of it. Tuck them inside one another.

    6

Secure the flaps into place with duct tape.

    7

Open the top of the kunai and insert the pencil inside of it. Wrap tape around the point of the cone, or kunai, to secure it and the pencil together. Throw it in much the way you would a paper airplane and see how much distance and height you can attain.

How to Be a Southern Belle

Instructions

    1

    5

Have your gardener plant plenty of magnolia trees for you sit under while you read letters from your beau.

    6

Understand that when things get difficult or you're expected to physically work, you may experience a case of the "vapors."

    7

Read "Gone with the Wind" and learn to quote Scarlett O'Hara. Study her movements and the subtle way she gets the attention of Rhett Butler.

How to Create Texture in an Abstract Painting

Texture helps lead the eye across the surface and create depth in a painting. You can create texture in many ways. You can make tracks on the gesso ground, add materials to the gesso and manipulate the paint using different tools, all for varied textural effects.

Instructions

Create a Rough Surface to Paint On

    1

Prepare canvas, hard wood or masonite with acrylic gesso before painting.

    2

Dilute the gesso with water, if necessary, but keep it fairly thick to get a rough surface.

    3

Apply the gesso loosely with trowel or painting knife.

    4

Coat the surface at least three times, waiting each time for it to dry.

    5

Go in a different direction each time you apply gesso.

    6

Coat the dried surface with pieces of paper or fabric. Glue pieces down with acrylic medium. Let it dry. Then apply two more coats of gesso.

Manipulate Paint for Additional Textures

    7

Squeeze paint directly onto the surface or apply paint onto the surface with painting knife. Then spread it out using squeegee or painting knife. Do this one color at a time.

    8

Vary strokes in size and direction leaving some areas free of color.

    9

Brush in heavy areas of color for interesting texture.

    10

Continue to build up surface in certain areas, leaving others unworked for a varied surface of hills and valleys.

How to Play the Card Game Phase 10

How to Play the Card Game Phase 10

Phase 10 is a highly addictive card game that's sure to have your household vying for the ultimate prize. It's different every time you play the game, making it a favorite among kids and adults alike. Playing this game just one time will make it a regular among your family and your friends.

Instructions

    1

Shuffle the deck and deal ten cards to each player. You should keep the contents of your cards secret from the rest of the players. Place the rest of the deck face down in the middle of the table. This deck becomes the draw pile.

    2

Turn over the top card on the draw pile to start the discard pile. The first player picks up the top card on the discard pile or draws a card from the draw pile. The turn ends when the player discards one card.

    3

Organize your cards to complete phase one. Phases usually consist of sets or runs. A set is two or more cards of the same number. A run is four or more cards numbered consecutively. All one color means all your cards must be the same color.

    4

Lay your cards face up on the table once you complete the phase. You must do this before you discard and you must have the entire phase complete before you can lay it down.

    5

Add additional cards that fit the phase that's laid on the table. You may play on your own phase, on any of your opponent's phases, or both. This is how you get rid of all your cards. The round is over when one player goes out, or gets rid of all the cards.

    6

Total all the cards that you did not lay down as part of your completed phase. If you did not complete the phase, all your cards count towards your total. The player receives five points for cards numbered one through nine, 10 points for cards numbered 10 through 12, 15 points for each Skip card and 25 points for each Wild card.

    7

Write the scores on a piece of paper. On this paper, it's easiest to designate one column for each player. You can keep track of the score as well as the current phase that player is on. Special score pads are available to make this easier.

    8

Repeat the steps above for the next round. If you've successfully completed phase one, you may move on to phase two. If you didn't complete phase one, you'll need to try again. Each player can only complete one phase per hand, and you must complete phases in order.

    9

Be the first player to complete all ten phases and you're the winner. If more than one player successfully completes all the phases, the player with the lowest score wins.

How to title your work of art

Once you've created a piece of artwork, deciding what to name it is the last part of the creative process. Here are tips and tricks to help make naming that piece of artwork easy.

Instructions

    1

Name your piece based on your inspiration. Is the artwork a depiction of a person, place or thing? What part of that person, place or thing inspired you to create your piece of artwork? Michelangelo's "David" was named after his inspiration for this glorious piece of artwork. Capture the emotion or being that captivated you and contributed to that piece of artwork.

    2

How to Check a Horse's Teeth

How to Check a Horse's Teeth

Sometimes, it is a good idea to look a horse in the mouth. Proper care of the teeth and early detection of gum disease may eliminate problems before they start. An exam of the teeth can also give you the age, health and general condition of the horse. Here's how to check a horse's mouth and teeth.

Instructions

    1

Make the horse feel safe and at ease before you start to examine the teeth. Spend a little time getting to know the horse to get a sense of their level of anxiety.

    2

Start with the front of the mouth. Part the lips and look at the front teeth. Look for incisors that are the same size and a flat, level biting surface. Check that the upper and lower incisors are flush with each, when viewed from the side view with the head in a grazing position.

    3

Look at the lower incisors from a side view. Raise the horse's head up with one hand under the chin. Properly aligned lower incisors will slide backwards from 3/8-inch to 1/2-inch as the head comes up.

    4

Check the grinding action of the molars. Place one hand on the underside of the lower jaw, cup the other hand over the nose and carefully slide the jaw to one side then to the other side. A normal result of this action is a grinding sound of the teeth as the rear molars make contact with each other.

    5

Stand clear of the horse's face and body while you are doing the next exam, as it may cause him to jerk his head. Feel the area above the temporal mandible joints on each side for heat and tightness or atrophy of the muscles and tendons. Do this by using gentle pressure to examine the area. If the incisors are too long, grinding food requires more pressure, and a painful condition may develop.

    6

Part the lips. Check for overbite or an underbite. From a side view, the top and bottom teeth are almost parallel when they are in good alignment.

    7

Smell the breath, as it is often a sign of dental disease.

How to Make a Curling Ribbon Bow

Gift wrapping is something anyone can do. The ability to make a curling ribbon bow is a neat trick that adds finishing touch to your package. Once you have mastered this, you're on your way to becoming a gift wrapping pro.

Instructions

    1

Take about 8 strands of curling ribbon and cut them so they're long enough to wrap around the box, tie into a bow and leave about 8-inch ends. Select a few different colors that coordinate with your wrapped gift box.

    2

Wrap the ribbons around your gift box. You should have the long ends to join on the front side of the box, forming a plus sign.

    3

Tie a tight double knot. This is easier if you can get another person to hold the ribbon in place while you're doing the second part of the knot. Then, tie the ribbon into a bow, the same kind you make when tying shoes.

    4

Cut the loops of the bow so they become straight strands of ribbon.

    5

Curl all the ribbon ends with a scissors. Open the scissors so you hold a blade between your thumb and forefinger. Place the ribbon under your thumb so it touches the blade. Pull the blade toward you until you reach the end of the ribbon.

    6

Add some extra curling ribbon if you want to make a fuller ribbon bow. Cut additional ribbon pieces about 14-inches long. Tie it to the existing bunch and curl it as described in Step 5.

How to Treat an Infant's Mongolian Spot

Mongolian spots are bluish-black, flat birthmarks in irregular shapes that occur mostly in infants of Indian, African and Latino heritage. Mongolian spots can be seen on various parts of the body of newborns. Sometimes infants are born with Mongolian spots, or the spots appear shortly after birth.

Instructions

    1

Note that Mongolian spots usually fade within a few years and are typically gone by puberty. Occasionally, they remain into adulthood, but there is no need for treatment to make them fade or disappear.

    2

Recognize Mongolian birthmark spots on infants as flat dark brown, dark gray or blue-black spots. They commonly appear on an infant's buttocks, lower back, shoulders, legs and sides. They can range from very small spots to large areas of deep, dark areas of skin.

    3

Realize that Mongolian spots are benign markings and carry no complications or risk factors. They are birthmarks and are not associated with any disease or illness.

    4

Be aware that Mongolian spots are easily mistaken for bruises and may trigger child abuse accusations. Make sure the child's pediatrician documents the Mongolian spots and includes detailed information in the child's health records.

    5

Understand that Mongolian spots are non-cancerous. They do not require treatment, and they cannot be prevented. They are not related to bruises or any additional medical problems. Further complications from Mongolian spots do not appear later in life.

How to Enjoy Full Moon Parties in the British Virgin Islands

A little-known secret of the British Virgin Islands is the "Full Moon Party." Every month, on the full moon, several establishments throw the best parties in the islands complete with bands, drink specials and more.

Instructions

    1

Know the lunar cycle. When you are heading to the islands, check to see when the next full moon takes place. If you get lucky, you might be there during the full moon.

    2

Check out the local establishments. Getting from island to island can be difficult, so you may want to check out a local bar even if it isn't considered one of the best parties.

    3

If you're on Tortola, check out the party at the Bhamba Shack or at Trellis Bay. These two parties are the two top spots in the B.V.I.'s.

    4

Go to the Bhamba Shack. The Bhamba Shack is a local bar located near West End. It is nothing more than a shack on the beach, started by a local surfer who sold drinks and sandwiches to other surfers. Throughout the years, the Bhamba Shack evolved into a night spot. Every full moon, they have a huge party. It is the top Full Moon Party in the islands, but be careful and don't drink the mushroom tea if you aren't prepared.

    5

Go to Trellis Bay. Trellis Bay is located on the other side of Tortola, next to the Beef Island Airport, the only airport on Tortola. It is another popular full moon party spot, and is more convenient to island visitors on other British Virgin Islands, since many water taxis and resort boats travel to Trellis Bay all the time. This party is also on the beach, but the bar is a more traditional beach bar.

How to Submit Art to DeviantART

How to Submit Art to DeviantART

While most artists sell their paintings through their own websites in addition to gallery sales, other online sources serve as a gallery for certain art genres. DeviantART.com, established in 2000, serves as an artistic community and online marketplace for painters, photographers and other creative artists to showcase and discuss their work. Users create personal pages to exhibit their work and interact with other members via messaging and bulletin boards.

Instructions

    1

Sign up for a free membership and create your own deviantART page. Follow the instructions to upload thumbnails of your art and type in text and descriptions when you submit it. You gain access to most of the Deviant assets with a free membership, including uploading your own profile and gallery of artwork. You may offer your prints, paintings, books or photographs for sale through deviantART.

    2

Upgrade to a subscription deviantART account. This paid feature allows users to utilize larger thumbnails, a personal calendar, shoutbox and forum and customize their page with additional features. An artist may purchase a 1-month, 3-month or 1-year subscription.

    3

Add an image by clicking on the "Submit Deviation" icon under choices. Check "Yes" underneath the Terms of Service Agreement and you'll get the "Submit Art" screen. Enter a title for your work, then choose a category from the drop-down list. When you make a choice like "painting," other lists will appear, prompting you to describe the piece in more detail. A drawing can be described as conceptual or storybook, for example.

    4

Upload a JPEG of your drawing, painting or print. You may add comments about the work in the "Artist's Comments" box, and enter keywords so people can find your work more easily. You may disable or encourage comments through the Deviation Options, and warn viewers about mature art content.

    5

Click on the optional "Creative Commons" license if you want to share your art and receive proper credit for it. You may let people share and distribute the work you submit for non-commercial use with proper attribution, and allow or restrict derivative versions of the piece.

How to Find Starfish

How to Find Starfish

For many, finding various living creatures is the best part of visiting the ocean. Not only is it entertaining, but it is a great way to teach youngsters about marine life. Starfish are often a favorite for beachcombers of all ages.

Instructions

    1

Look for a rocky beach. Starfish cling to rocks underwater near the shore, and this is your best bet for finding these interesting creatures.

    2

Wait for low tide. When the tide ebbs, the ocean reveals many rocks that had been underwater. It also leaves behind tide pools, which harbor a variety of ocean creatures. Low tide is the best time to look for starfish since you will have greater access to their habitats.

    3

Look for bright colors. Starfish resemble their habitat in texture, but can often be easily spotted by their colorful contrast to their background. Starfish are often red, yellow, orange or purple.

    4

Take a closer look. Finding the starfish is just half the fun. Once you find one, look for others. Starfish can vary greatly in color, shape, size, pattern and the number of their arms. It can be fun to see how many different starfish you can find and compare.

    5

Touch the starfish. The way it feels may surprise you. Gently touch the tiny tube feet on the arms of the starfish. They use these to move around.

How to Profit in Art by Buying and Selling Valuable Paintings

Buying and selling art can be a lucrative investment. By educating yourself and performing diligent research, you can make money in this sophisticated hobby. All you need is motivation and a mentor to guide you, and you're on your way to success.

Instructions

    1

Choose first if you want to assume the role of an investor, collector or dealer, because each role requires a different agenda and approach to art investment. The collector goes by her own aesthetic interests, the investor chooses which painting is in highest demand and the dealer uses the simple economics of buying low and selling high.

    2

Decide which types of art you would like to invest in. There are three types of art: decorative art, collectible art and investment art. Decorative art is highly affordable but doesn't merit the most profit, while collectible art pertains to personal interest, but doesn't warrant long-term profit. Investment art, however, accrues value over long periods because well-listed professionals author the work.

    3

Invest wisely in rare paintings. For instance, devoting money in nineteenth-century art leads to profit, because no one creates it anymore. As a first-time investor, you should ask for help from a professional who can teach you how to familiarize yourself with high-quality paintings. Remember, the more you know about your art, the more you can make.

    4

Educate yourself on what sells. Know which thematic paintings sell the most. For example, paintings portraying life are more popular than paintings depicting death.

    5

Find a reputable supplier, and develop a working relationship with the buyer. Knockers go door to door asking whether people have any valuables for sale, while pickers generally travel a lot, buying paintings from flea markets, then traveling further down the road and selling them at a higher price. Dealers bid with collectors, investors, galleries and even museums, but the auction rooms offer the best opportunities.

    6

Establish a method for buying paintings. For instance, purchase only paintings that are professional, original, in good condition and are in high demand by other collectors.

    7

Recognize opportunities when you see them. Don't be timid. Study frequently, and keep yourself updated with the market.
