How to Give a Wedding Anniversary Party Toast

The host of the anniversary party is expected to give a toast to the couple celebrating. A toast speech can be formal, informal, serious or more on the funny side. After the host's toast it is usually appropriate for the couple celebrating to add some of their own words.

Instructions

    1

Begin a toast by getting the attention of all the guests. Either start your toast by tapping your silverware on a glass, or use a microphone and get everyone's attention.

    2

Congratulate the happy couple in your first sentence.

    3

Reminisce about big moments in the couple's lives. Start with important births, marriages and jobs.

    4

Include funny memories you have shared with the couple that makes them and the rest of the guests laugh. Use discretion when selecting memories.

    5

Show a video of photographs from the couple's marriage. This can be put together using a computer and shown on a large screen with a projector attached to a lap top computer.

    6

Use music in the background if you like, but be sure it is very soft so your words are still clear to everyone in the room.

    7

End the toast by congratulating the couple again and raising your glass as a sign that the toast is ending and everyone should raise their glass to celebrate.

How to Teach Montessori at Home

How to Teach Montessori at Home

Basic Montessori techniques for toddlers and preschoolers are aimed at giving children some independence, teaching practical life skills and allowing them to learn through their senses. It is fairly easy to set up a Montessori environment in the home and to use Montessori techniques with your child. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

    1

Set up toy and play areas with shelves that are accessible to children. Have containers for each toy. Label them with photographs or pictures. Display books so that the front of the book is visible.

    2

Create spaces in the kitchen where the child can work. Low shelves in a cabinet and the refrigerator can hold their cups, utensils, cereal and snacks. An open dishwater door creates a counter for them to work on. Allow them to prepare their own snacks and help with meal preparation, including pouring, measuring and stirring.

    3

Teach the child some basic chores. Small children can sort dirty clothes, fold washed laundry and put their clothes away. They can help to polish silver, wipe tables and clean the bathroom. They should be responsible for cleaning their play areas and toys.

    4

Give children limited choices throughout the day. For example, allow them to choose between two shirts, two choices for lunch and two books to read. The choices can expand as they get older.

    5

Show the child how to spoon and pour small items like rice or beans from one dish to another, focusing on not spilling any.

    6

Gather items to explore through the senses. Have the child to sort material and sandpaper based on how it feels. Put one spice into a pair of jars. Create four different pairs and have her identify the pairs that belong together through smelling them. Throughout the day, encourage the child to explore her environment through her senses.

    7

Purchase Montessori toys, or create some on your own. Glue sandpaper to cut out letters and shapes and have the child trace the outline. Create games that involve sorting, pouring and stacking.

How to Play French Hopscotch

Kids all around the world play hopscotch. From country to country the name is different as well as the way the hopscotch grid is drawn. The following steps will show you how to draw and play the French version of hopscotch, which is called "Escargot" in French.

Instructions

Draw the Hopscotch Grid

    1

Draw a large swirl on the sidewalk or pavement for French hopscotch. The hopscotch will look like a large snail and have 3 large swirls inside it with a small circle in the very middle.

    2

Make lines to form boxes all around the swirls. You should have 16 lines when you are done.

    3

Number the boxes starting at one on the bottom of the first swirl on the outside and going all the way to 17 in the middle.

Play the Hopscotch Game

    4

Hop on one foot starting at square one all the way to the middle of the swirl. Take a rest in every center of the hopscotch grid.

    5

Lose a turn if you step on any lines as you jump through the hopscotch grid, causing the next person in line to start their turn.

    6

Return to square one by hopping all the way back around on the same foot.

    7

Go around again and back for the second time.

    8

Choose a square on the way back for the second time to mark as your "house" if you were successful in hopping in and out both times without stepping on any lines. Draw your initials on the square you have chosen.

    9

Take turns going around the hopscotch grid hopping on one foot, resting on the squares with your initials in them with both feet and jumping over squares with other people's initials on them. With each turn, choose an additional square to write your initials on.

    10

End the game when it is impossible for anyone to hop to the center of the hopscotch grid. The winner is the player with the most squares with their initials in them at the end of the game.

How to Sell a Recipe for Publication

Whether you're a professional chef or just enjoy cooking, creating your own recipes can be a rewarding experience. When you discover an especially tasty or unique recipe combination, you may want to share it with others. The best way to do that is to sell a recipe for publication in a magazine, cookbook, newspaper or other medium.

Instructions

    1

Write your recipe down, making careful notes as you go. Include every step of the process involved in making the recipe.

    2

Search the Internet to see whether your recipe has already been published. While a simple ingredient list or formula for a recipe can't be copyrighted, a series of instructions can. Before you sell a recipe for publication, you need to insure that it is uniquely yours.

    3

Consider a copyright for your recipe. Get instructions on how to copyright your recipe at the U.S. Copyright Office website. (See Resources)

    4

Decide where you want to sell your recipe for publication. You can sell your recipe for publication in a cookbook, a magazine, a local newspaper or to an online website. You can also submit your recipe to a recipe contest, from which the winning recipes are generally published.

    5

Send your recipe to the appropriate place. Take care to follow the publication's instructions. If you haven't heard back within 2 months, consider finding another publication for your recipe.

How to Organize a Prom Dress Swap

How to Organize a Prom Dress Swap

Many prom dresses get worn once and then hung in a closet or resold on eBay or consignment. A prom dress swap allows girls to exchange prom dresses, jewelry, shoes and accessories with other girls. Each girl gets new prom attire for approximately the same value without having to spend the money for another store bought dress. Occasionally you can buy cheap prom dresses at a swap.

Instructions

    1

Schedule a day and time for the swap. The ideal time for a prom dress swap is right after prom or right before the following year's prom. This way, girls are excited about prom and are interested in exchanging dresses. If you plan to sell dresses cheaply, you should wait until prom is coming up.

    2

Advertise the event. You can put flyers up at schools, post a listing on Craigslist or call your friends who attended prom. The more girls who attend, the more dresses to choose from. Be sure you have a contact person whose information is provided on advertisements. If you are charging a cover charge, put the amount on the advertisements.

    3

Set up rules. To be fair, people who attend the event need to bring prom attire to swap or plan on buying a dress at a cheap price. Some people prefer to set criteria that the attendees must have attended prom at a specific school in order to take part in the swap. If the attendees want to sell their dresses rather than swap, you can combine the dress swap with a dress sale.

    4

Rent a facility. If you belong to a church or a social organization, you may save money by using their facility. You need to make sure you have enough room for the estimated turn out. Consider if you want a runway to showcase dresses. You may need to charge admission to cover your expenses.

    5

Organize the area with tables and racks. Hang dresses in the same size together. Use tables to sort jewelry, accessories and shoes. The shoes should also be sorted by size. Plan on having full length mirrors and changing rooms available for the girls.

    6

Plan events to coincide with the dress swap. This is a good opportunity to cover health and safety issues for prom. The girls can participate in a runway show to present their dresses. Local beauty salons or colleges may volunteer to do hair and makeup for the show.

    7

Add activities. DJs can play background music. You can raffle prizes like hair and make-up sessions or alterations from local companies. Refreshments are standard at some dress swaps. Local alteration companies may want to set up a booth to advertise their services.

How to Store Beets in a Root Cellar

Beets. You either love them, or you hate them. If you're a member of the beet fan club, you'll be happy to know that beets are a wonderful item to store in a root cellar. Beets are easy to grow, easy to harvest, have a long storage life and are wonderfully flavorful. Plus, they add a great dash of color to your winter menu. Read on to learn more.

Instructions

    1

Harvest the beets in your garden before you harvest any carrots or potatoes. They are slightly more susceptible to frost damage than carrots or potatoes so should be processed for root cellar storage first.

    2

Use a pitchfork to gently and carefully loosen the soil around the rows of beets.

    3

Remove the beet greens approximately 1 inch from the top of the beet. Don't cut too close to the top of the beet or the beet will bleed, which will accelerate spoilage.

    4

Leave the pointed beet tip intact.

    5

Spread newspaper on a table and lay the beets out to cure for a few days. Remove large clumps of dirt by gently brushing them off by hand or with a cloth rag.

    6

Pack the cured beets in layers of moist sand, saw dust or peat moss in a cardboard box or wooden crate.

    7

Store the boxes or crates in the root cellar. The ideal storage temperature is 32 degrees Fahrenheit at 90-95% humidity.

How to Fund-raise With an Art Auction

An art auction is a sophisticated and easy way for a nonprofit organization to raise money. Such a fund-raising event is simple to organize, and will attract buyers eager to spend money on high-quality artwork. The best part is that fund-raising with an art auction requires little overhead.

Instructions

    1

Look for artists who are willing to donate art. Let them know that art auctions give them a chance to receive free publicity, and disclose how you plan to promote the event.

    2

Help the artists choose a minimum bid for their work. You will want to convince the artist to keep the price in a reasonable range in order to prevent scaring off potential buyers.

    3

Make sure the venue you choose is spacious. It will need enough wall space to display the different pieces of art. Use lights and backgrounds to highlight the works.

    4

Put together a program that gives the artists' biographies as well as information about the works up for auction.

    5

Hire a personable and experienced auctioneer who is knowledgeable about art. You want the buyers to be entertained as they bid on the pieces. If they are in a good mood, they are more likely to spend more money.

    6

Provide notes to the auctioneer on the artwork being sold. The emcee should be able to provide a detailed description to the potential buyers.

The best way to make good decisions on the horses is to understand the odds and learn who influences these odds. The people who create the morning line are the first to influence the odds on the tote board at post time. These influential people are public handicappers.

Instructions

    1

Understand that the morning line is not very accurate. It is a last minute responsibility completed 48 hours prior to post time.

    2

Purchase a program for the day and look at the public handicapper's selections. Notice that all handicappers lay about the same odds for each horse.

    3

Study the program for each race and realize that any horse listed at 20 to 1 is 99 to 1 in reality.

    4

Select other literature to read the morning line odds. Towns that have a racetrack usually publish a racing form in their daily paper.

    5

Log on to the website of the racetrack. There will be a link to the morning line odds on the website.

    6

Compose a list of horses for each race that you believe will win, place or show. Go to an Off-Track Betting establishment and compare your picks to the tote around the country.

    7

Read the horse racing blog of the day. Blogs on horse racing sometimes include the inaccuracies of the morning line odds.

How to Feed Pheasants

You want to raise pheasants that are healthy, but you also want pheasants that are large enough to provide good meat. Keep them well-fed and healthy by using proper bird feed designed for pheasants. Use these tips to feed pheasants.

Instructions

    1

Use nutritionally enhanced bird feed that has been developed specifically for pheasants. Or buy powdered vitamins that you can add to your regular bird feed.

    2

Check the levels of protein before purchasing. Pheasants need high protein to maintain their health. Feed comes as grains, pellets or mash and any of those will work.

    3

Give feed with 30 percent protein to chicks; use feed with 19 percent protein for pre-adult pheasants and give between 12 percent and 20 percent to adult birds depending on whether or not they are breeding. Breeding birds need the higher percentage.

    4

Add hard-boiled eggs to increase the protein levels of regular feed. Add grit to help with the digestive system of the pheasants.

    5

Let them have peanuts or meal worms as treats. Serve them meal worms that are still alive or add live crickets to the dish--they enjoy live treats.

    6

Use different types of grain like corn, wheat, oats and rye. You can also add cracked corn to the mix. Some types of birds like peacock pheasants need fruits and vegetables in their diet. You can try adding a variety of each.

    7

Serve your pheasants food each day by placing the food in a trough or by using a feeding machine that allows food to drop into a trough below.

How to Tip Blackjack Dealers

How to Tip Blackjack Dealers

It's always a good idea to tip your blackjack dealers when gambling at a casino, especially if you are winning. By tipping well, you develop a good relationship with the dealers, pit bosses and other employees within the gaming pit. By doing this, it will be more likely that you will get comps and quicker drink service. Read on to learn how to tip blackjack dealers.

Instructions

    1

Look at your chips and decide what you can afford. You don't want to tip more than you can afford. If you are losing money, you probably shouldn't be tipping. However, if you are winning, you likely will have some $1.00 chips or 50 cent pieces. These are perfect for tipping, since it is highly unlikely that you will use them while gambling.

    2

Tip after a win. If you want to tip after a big win or a dealer bust, place your tip on the table above the betting circle after a hand has concluded. You may also want to tell the dealer that this is for them. Sometimes, a tip can be confused with you asking for change. So, let it be known that it is a tip.

    3

Play a hand with the dealer. To do this, place your bet in the betting circle as you normally would. Then, place your tip bet on the edge of the circle next to your bet. By doing this, the dealer plays the same cards that you play. If you win, the dealer wins and their tip goes up. If you lose, the dealer loses and they don't get a tip.

    4

Tell the employees what you are doing. If you are tipping big, make sure to tell the dealers and pit bosses. This will get them on your good side.

    5

Ask questions. By tipping well, you gain the dealers and pit bosses attention. If you want something, ask them. They are more likely to provide help, drinks and comps to you if you are tipping well.

How to Conjugate Spanish Verbs

Anyone learning a new language faces the challenge of having to change a newly learned verb to a different form depending upon whom the verb refers. Almost all languages conjugate verbs, even the English language. If English is your native tongue, you conjugate verbs hundreds of times daily unconsciously. When learning Spanish, here's an easy way to conjugate those verbs.

Instructions

    1

Look for the endings -ar, -er, or -ir. All Spanish verbs fall one of these three categories and each has a different rule for conjugation.

    2

Decide to whom the verb refers. This determines what ending will replace the endings listed in Step 1.

    3

Take off the original ending and replace with the appropriate ending for the person affected.

    4

Follow patterns set for verbs considered basic or regular. Verbs in this category follow standard rules like changing the ending to -o for the first person. Find a helpful list of verbs in these categories on Spanish Learn-It Online's website.

    5

Watch out for irregular verbs. Like the English language, there are always exceptions to the rules. Verbs in this category may look like they fall into the standard category but they follow rules of their own.

How to Light an Oil Hanukkah Menorah

How to Light an Oil Hanukkah Menorah

Hanukkah, or the Festival of Lights, lasts for eight days. Hanukkah celebrates the rededication of the Second Temple of Jerusalem in the second century B.C. The festival starts on the 25th day of Kislev as recorded on the Hebrew calendar. On the Georgian calendar, Hanukkah begins either in late November or in late December.

Instructions

    1

Set a time aside to light the menorah. The time needed is 10 to 15 minutes if there is oil in the menorah already. Use olive oil in the menorah.

    2

Check to make sure that the menorah you use has nine candles. A nine-candled menorah is a Hanukkah menorah. The tallest candle is the Shamash and used to light the other eight candles.

    3

Find a Hebrew calendar and calculate the 24th day of the Hebrew month of Kislev. At sunset of the 24th day, the first candle is lit on the menorah. You want to be ready to light the candle as the sun goes down.

    4

Gather everyone in your family so that all are present. Let the candle burn for at least 45 minutes. If the candle goes out, re-light it, but not on Shabbos.

    5

Calculate the days to see if the 24th day of Kislev falls on Shabbos. If it does, light the first candle before the Shabbos candles.

    6

Read all three blessings on the first night. All the other nights read only the first two blessings.

    7

Maintain the tradition of lighting the menorah in consecutive nights and light each candle, one a night, from left to right.
