An open dishwater door creates a counter for them to work on. Allow them to prepare their own snacks and help with meal preparation, including pouring, measuring and stirring.
3Teach the child some basic chores. Small children can sort dirty clothes, fold washed laundry and put their clothes away. They can help to polish silver, wipe tables and clean the bathroom. They should be responsible for cleaning their play areas and toys.
4Give children limited choices throughout the day. For example, allow them to choose between two shirts, two choices for lunch and two books to read. The choices can expand as they get older.
5Show the child how to spoon and pour small items like rice or beans from one dish to another, focusing on not spilling any.
6Gather items to explore through the senses. Have the child to sort material and sandpaper based on how it feels. Put one spice into a pair of jars. Create four different pairs and have her identify the pairs that belong together through smelling them. Throughout the day, encourage the child to explore her environment through her senses.
7Purchase Montessori toys, or create some on your own. Glue sandpaper to cut out letters and shapes and have the child trace the outline. Create games that involve sorting, pouring and stacking.
