How to Tighten a Flapper Chain

How to Tighten a Flapper Chain

When you push the handle of your toilet nothing happens. You open the tank lid to take a look and the little chain that connects the toilet flapper to the handle has come undone. Don't sweat it; you don't need to call the plumber. Here are the few simple steps required to tighten that chain for getting your toilet flapper up and flushing again quickly.

Instructions

    1

Open the lid to the back of the toilet. Find a sturdy place to put the ceramic lid, somewhere other than across the back of the tank. If the lid slips in, you might break the tank and flood the bathroom. Not only will you have a loose flapper chain, you will also need to clean up a lot of water off the floor as well.

    2

Check the flapper chain and handle arm for corrosion. Any corrosion could weaken the chain and cause it to stretch. If either part seems too far gone, then you'll need to replace it.

    3

Remove the chain hook from it's place on the flusher arm. It is usually a small "C" clamp that opens with a push of your thumbnail.

    4

Move the clamp up a notch or two on the flusher arm. The flusher arm has three holes in which to make this adjustment with the chain. Move the chain to one of the three holes that lift the flapper when the handle is pressed slightly. Don't move it too far or the toilet tank will loose water through the flapper valve.

    5

Replace the lid and try it out. If the handle is still not lifting the toilet flapper, try moving the clamp to a different hole on the handle arm. If this doesn't work, shorten the chain by attaching the clamp farther up the chain.
