How to Visit the Musee D'Orsay

Renowned for its collection of French impressionism, the Musee D'Orsay mainly holds French art dating from 1848 to 1914. This includes paintings, sculptures, furniture, and photography. The museum is probably best known for its extensive collection of impressionist masterpieces by popular painters such as Monet and Renoir.

Visit the museum between 9:30a.m.and 6 p.m. Tuesday to Sunday, except for Thursday when the museum stays open until 9:45 p.m. The last tickets are sold at 5 p.m. regularly and 9 p.m. on Thursdays.

Book group visits ahead of time. Group visits must take place between 9:30 a.m.and 4 p.m. Tuesday to Saturday and can go no later than 8 p.m. on Thursdays.

Admire the museum's building, the former Gare d'Orsay train station.

Remember to see the museum's best-known works, including Starry Night Over the Rhone by Van Gogh, Bal au Moulin de la Galette, Montmartre by Pierre-Auguste Renoir and Rue Montorgueil in Paris by Claude Monet.

Start your museum tour on the ground floor. The exhibits are presented in chronological order, from the bottom to the upper level. Admire sculptures, paintings, decorative arts and architecture from 1848 to the 1880s on the ground floor.

Continue your visit on the top level, home to most of the Musee D'Orsay's biggest attractions. Take the time to appreciate the impressionist and post-impressionist work, including the paintings of Pisarro, Manet, Degas, Monet, Renoir, Cezanne Gaughin and Van Gogh, as well as sculptures by Degas, Renoir and Gauguin.
