How to Attend a Smithsonian Summer Camp

The Smithsonian Institute (SI) and its museums form a vital part of America's cultural, scientific and artistic heritage. People from around the world come to visit the museums located in the nation's capitol, Washington D.C. In addition, the Smithsonian offers week-long summer camps for students from kindergarten to ninth grade. Young explorers can learn more about art, history, culture and science in a fun setting.

Instructions

    1

Visit the Smithsonian site and download the brochure for summer camp. You can also visit the websites of the specific museums to see if they offer any other summer programs. The Smithsonian's National Zoo has its own summer camp programs onsite.

    2

Decide which programs would be good fit for your student. Each camp lasts a week. Choices include full day camps and half day camps. Half day camps can start in the morning or the afternoon, depending on the class.

    3

Know the dates of the camp. From June 25 to August 10, 2007, SI summer camps are open for students. During the week of July 4, the Smithsonian camp is out of session for the holiday break.

    4

Find the camp location. Most Smithsonian camps are held in S. Dillon Ripley Center in Washington DC with the exceptions of the camps dealing with the National Zoo, cyber-animation and performing arts. Call to make sure none of the venues have changed.

    5

Set aside money for attending camp. Price start at $175 for half-day camps and go up to $418 for full-day camps for one summer camp session. Costs may vary depending on the type of camp and its popularity. Be sure you understand the Smithsonian's refund policy before signing up.

    6

Know that the National Zoo summer camp is structured differently. The Smithsonian's National Zoo administers its own day camp called Safari Camp for students in grades K-5. Prices vary from $155 to $295. View their schedule on the Zoo's website.

    7

Drop off your students at the designated spot. The students aren't allowed to come to camps by themselves. After registration, parents should receive information about the drop off and pick up points for their camp attendees.
