How to Get Inspired to Paint

How to Get Inspired to Paint

Every now and then, even the best of artists need some inspiration to get going on a new creative project. When your ideas aren't flowing as freely as you'd like, it can be hard to keep your momentum going as a painter. Here are some ways you can get inspired to paint, draw, sculpt, or create any other type of art.

Instructions

    1

Put on some of your favorite music, preferably something atmospheric. Anything that helps you calm down, let go of stress and clear your mind of distractions is a great choice. Sit down and close your eyes, and allow images to come into your mind at will, without trying to control them.

    2

Watch movies in a genre appropriate to your style of art. For example, if you paint fantasy art, watch films in that genre. Movies with a lot of lush imagery can help conjure up artistic ideas in your mind.

    3

People watch in a sidewalk caf, if you draw or paint people as subjects. Sometimes, observing interaction between strangers can give you inspiration for a new work of art.

    4

Browse for new artists online, or visit art galleries locally. Seeing other artists' work can help spur your mind into thinking creative thoughts. You're not necessarily out to copy ideas from other people, just to surround yourself with artistic talent.

    5

Read a book that relates to your style of art. Just as with watching movies, the imagery that's called forth in your mind as you read can give you some new ideas.

    6

Break your normal routine. Take a day off from work, errands and chores. Go for a walk in the countryside, a crowded city, along the ocean, or whatever strikes your fancy and take in the sights and sounds. Sometimes, all you need is a chance to separate yourself from the daily grind.
