How to Make Art Like Eric Carle

Squeeze a bright shade of acrylic paint into a bowl and mix with water. Repeat with different shades of paint so that you have three or four bowls with a different color in each.

Paint a single piece of tissue paper with one of the paint and water mixtures. Let the tissue paper dry on newspapers.

Apply a second coat of a different color of paint and water mixture over the tissue paper in wavy brush strokes. After the tissue paper has dried, apply a third coat of another color in dashes or dots to make an art pattern.

Soak a piece of carpet, sponge or burlap into another bowl of paint and water. Wring out the piece of material, and dab it onto different areas of the tissue paper.

Draw a small creature (such as a caterpillar, cricket, firefly or spider) with a Sharpie marker onto a piece of tracing paper.

Lay the tracing paper over the piece of painted tissue paper. Cut out the different segments of the creature's body by cutting along the black lines.

Apply a thin layer of glue or wallpaper paste over the cut shapes of tissue paper. Paste the shapes onto a white illustration board. Now you've made a piece of art in the same style as Eric Carle.
