How to Get a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship

The Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship and Excellence in Education Foundation was created in 1986 by Congress. Its purpose is to encourage excellence in science and mathematics. It provides $7,500 to students to help with the cost of books, tuition, fees, room and board. Follow these steps to get a Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.

Instructions

    1

    Pursue a career in math, engineering or natural sciences. You must be a college junior or senior to be eligible for the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship.

    Keep your grades up. You must have a GPA of at least a "B" and be in the upper 25 percent of your class to get the Barry M. Goldwater Scholarship. Know that you have to be a U.S. citizen, a U.S. national or resident alien to qualify.

    Know that up to 300 Barry M. Goldwater Scholarships are awarded each year. Students may receive one or two years of support.

    Make an appointment with the Goldwater Scholarship Faculty member on your campus. Discuss your desire to get the scholarship. Each university and college can only nominate a select number of students. You must be nominated by a faculty member to be considered.

    Prepare a solid essay discussing a significant problem or issue in your field of study. Use the essay as your chance to show your personality and commitment to mathematics, engineering or natural sciences.

    Demonstrate your grasp of your chosen field. Portray your desires to seek a higher level of education in math or science.
