How to Arrange a Free-Standing Floral Arrangement

A free-standing floral arrangement should be visible from any angle. Tall flowers set the line of the arrangement. Other flowers are added as a focal point. Free-standing arrangements brighten up a home and make great gifts or centerpieces.

Instructions

    1

Cut a piece of foam to fit a small container and extend 1 inch over the top.

    2

Glue the foam to the base of the container or use floral clay to secure it.

    3

Purchase flowers for the arrangement. The three types of flowers used in a free-standing arrangement are line, focal and filler flowers. Use three or more different colors. One color should be dominant and occur among different types of flowers. The colors should complement each other.

    4

Look at the flowers to understand their roles in the arrangement. Tall flowers with blossoms close to the stem are called line flowers. They're used to define the arrangement's shape. Focal flowers add weight and visual interest and are placed throughout the arrangement. Filler flowers are used to fill spaces.

    5

Place line flowers in the foam to define the shape of the arrangement. Line flowers include delphiniums, stock, gladiola and snapdragons.

    6

Choose focal flowers like hydrangeas, magnolias and roses. Secure the flowers to the foam in the center of the container, slightly above or drooping over the edge. Place the flowers so that they face different directions. Turn the vase as you arrange the flowers for an even design.

    7

Finish the arrangement with filler flowers like baby's breath, dianthus, pom-poms and poppies. Leave spaces where foliage is visible.
